The “Music in Glee” Review Season 3 Episode 1 “The Purple Piano Project”

Musically there’s tons of fun stuff going on in the Glee season 3 premier: Vanessa Lengies (Sugar) as the first real glee club reject, Glee Project runner-up Lindsay Pearce making her very Rachel Berry-esque debut, purple pianos…. What could be better?

Flaming pianos. Yeah.

Speaking of pianos…let’s talk about some of the episode’s high notes:

  • Will coming up with the “purple piano project”. While it was really only a good idea for New Directions in theory, you’ve gotta admire the Schuester, if only for the thought of playing purple pianos in the hallway (that Sue will later gut right in front of Asian #1 and #2).
  • Best. Food fight scene. Ever. Mainly because it was preceded by possibly one of the most awesome musical number scenes of Glee. I mean, how is Puck push-ups and dancing on lunch tables not awesome? With something like this starting off the season, it’s no wonder there’s so many cast injuries in these first couple of episodes.
  • Vanessa Lengies singing completely off completely on-purpose in her “Sugary” performance for Mr. Schue. This was totally hilarious, and it will be so interesting to have a character like Sugar on the show, who’s as sure of herself as Rachel Berry – and yet she can’t sing. Props to Vanessa for pulling off a funny scene like this live.
  • Darren Criss channeling Tom Jones in Blaine’s very “unusual” show to the McKinley quad crowd. Talk about a hot performance. Notice the sunglasses? They may not be pink, but we’ll take what we can get.
  • What did you guys think of Lindsay’s musical number? Even if she wasn’t my favorite Glee Project contestant, boy does that girl have a set of vocal chords on her. Really though, I thought Lindsay did an excellent job at putting on the show that ends up completely dashing the stardom hopes and dreams of Kurt and Rachel. Perfect type of role for her. And that Rachel-and-Kurt scene at the end there? All kinds of win.
  • And of course I’ll mention this number, since I’m a big Hairspray fan – but what I felt was really cool about it is the way it was incorporated into the episode. Before watching I envisioned it as a song happening earlier on in the episode, but it was such a treat to save it for closer to the end. Not just because of the killer choreography (Zach really did a number on this episode), but because it really made me feel as though Rachel was a little more at peace as far as her future after high school is concerned.

P.S.
Anyone else just love Finn’s faces this episode? Sometimes I wonder if Cory’s directed to act as confused as he makes Finn look all the time. Ha.

What were your low and high notes with the season 3 premier?

Hi!

I really like watching glee. Rachel and Finn really looks good together. Hehe! By the way, you have a lot of Filipino fans. Do you have any plans having an album tour in the Philippines? =)

Poor Will, he has to fight back Sue and it’s going to be difficult. “Obviously your ears are busted because I worked that song like a hooker pole. It’s alright, I’ll come back in and sing again.” Oh god, that was funny. I have to admit that Blain has a great voice and I’m glad he’ll be around more often; however I liked hearing the guys sing more than the others. I missed most of the first season which I need to go back and watch. That first season was about the baby between Quinn and Puck, but now that story is back in the picture. I’m glad that I can get the episodes on DVD from Blockbuster with my Movie Pass because it’s so convenient to have them sent to my home. I also love that the Movie Pass is free for new customers but I get it with my employee account for only $10 a month on the same bill.
